It's just one of the things people here are born knowing. The rest of the must have list:
Plenty of fresh drinking water. It can be a long time before it's restored.Clorox - in case you don't have enough fresh water.
Batteries - lots for flashlights and radios. Candles used to be recommended, but now they're worried about fire and no water hoses. I use candles anyway - and have a wind-up radio.
Canned food. But don't buy anything you won't eat anyway. Conversation with co-worker - H: My wife made me by spam before the storm, and now I'm going to be eating it for months!!! M: Do you normally eate spam? H: no.. M: then why do you think you will eat it during a hurricane....
A full tank of gas. Pumps may not be working, and the tanks might have water in them if they do work.
And AllWays watch the weather.
