It's so true that it's what you got out of art school that's important, and not how you got there.
I know what you mean about our past haunting us. For me it is taking a long time to figure out how my past has impacted the way I am today. For me it's a lifetime project to incorporate the past into who I am today; not to be hurt, angry, or ashamed of it. At the moment that seems to be possible by a person much stronger and smarter than I am, but I won't stop trying.
And don't let your past diminish what you've accomplished so far! An artist, a mother, a wife - and most importantly, a very caring person. Those also came from your past!
