St@cy,

I think that many people laugh at what frightens them. It's not that they don't respect death, but more that they are terrified of it and the humor is a way of de-fusing it.

On the other hand, some people don't laugh. A few years ago, a very good friend and her husband lost their daughter in a car accident. She was 18. She was studying to be a nurse. It was horrible. She was a really good friend to my older daughter. Her death tore up an entire city. There were still the few who would joke, but for the most part, they realized that it was a great tragedy.

The death of someone your own age or younger brings harshly to mind the fact that people OUR age do die. Some from illness, some from accident. Sometimes we don't know when it will happen, and sometimes we do. The point is that it will happen, and it's kind of our job to do our best until it happens to us. Someone said that it's not the length of our days, but how we spent them that matters.

How is it supposed to feel? It's different for everyone. There isn't a prescribed way to feel for any particular situation. When we're depressed, the hurt will be deeper. The guilt may feel deeper, but again, we need to remember that what we are experiencing might be altered by the illness.

Take care of yourself. You are special.

Dee.
