Mair, at the time of that visit I was "high functioning". I had a very demanding full-time job of great complexity and no small responsibility. Nevertheless, I was miserable, and feeling rather prone to suicide. I did not ask that doc to elaborate his answer to my question, because in this case the context made it clear. That doc wasn't exactly "stupid", per se, but he wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, either, and he didn't have any insights into my situation that I hadn't already figured out for myself.
