Saw an article in Scientific American a year or so ago, where they studied and concluded that "talking to yourself" was an important stage in childhood development Because it is a means for problem solving for humans... when I get harrased at work for talking to myself, I just expalin to my co-workers that I'm not talking to them ... if they deign to ask who I'm talkin to, I tell then, If I was talking to you, you'd know it ... sometimes I use it to externalize my feelings, especially anger, i.e. "venting", for the catharsis.
