I purposely stayed out of this one, and I admit in advance that I probably should have honoured that thought, but I am ambivalent.
Does it matter if the lid is designed in, or not? Who has the problem when it is left open? Shouldn't the person who has the most problem with the issue simply do what needs doing to make the problem go away? The person leaving it up clearly doesn't have a problem with the act of omission. Then, is it about respect? Respecting the "close the dang thing when done" feeling, because it is strong? But what about "don't sweat the small stuff"?
I do the dishes when it looks to me like they need doing. Similar, toilets. My ex and I had different versions of those thresholds. And darn it all, wouldn't you know it? The dishes and toilets never got close to my threshold. However, I was by far the better cook. And I don't mind grocery shopping. I love having a full pantry to choose from. And Campbell's soup might be an ingredient, but never a meal, if I am cooking, ya know? Thing is, we settled on being equally busy around the house. Funny, she almost never got the "lawn needs mowing/snow needs shovelling/car needs an oil change" problems that I had. Ya know?
I don't know that there is a right answer. However, there are wrong answers. Silently stewing is a wrong answer. For me, lifting the darn toilet seat every time I have to pee is a pain in the uhhhhh bum. Inconsiderate people leaving it down all the time......
