hi angela,
I guess I have several definitions of "friend" -- there's my IDEAL "friend" who doesn't really exist (and I'm not this perfect as a friend, either!) Then there are my 'real' friends and my 'acquaintance' friends.

Real friends, who are quite rare (I think) -

we are comfortable with each other. We can laugh, cry, snort out a snot, be bratty, and STILL like each other.

We are there for each other in fun times and miserable times. WE listen to all the crap, even if it's boring, even if we disagree.

We can hang out without needing to talk each minute.

We can talk about REAL feelings and emotions, not just surface chatter. We trust each other and don't divulge secrets. We don't talk trash about each other. We are kind to each other.

We're not afraid to be weak or imperfect.

I have only a few "real" friends, and a lot of acquaintance friends whom I quite like, but don't quite trust to the point of "best friend" and probably never will.

how about you?
