In reply to GOOD reading for borderline type disorder, posted by floatingbridge on January 20, 2011, at 16:48:09
Hi there,
I'd recommend reading G. Gabbard: Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice..it will likely change your view about psychiatry and mental health altogether-especially after so much suffering I've seen from you..way too much for such a nice person.
You didn't say this, but the concept of Borderline is not about matching yourself with a list of symptoms..you can be borderline and not have a personality disorder.....you can be borderline and not 'sefl injure'...etc etc forget the sterotypes..it's about how you feel about yourself, and how you feel about yourself in relation to others. In that, you'll find answers.
Borderline involves the Self (which does cause symptoms):
Affect - anxiety, depression, ahedonia, dysthymia, guilt, anger
Cognitive - perceptual and emotional sensitivity (hypersensitivity); somatic manifestations; neurological problems; concentration issues; dissociation; ADD symptoms
Interpersonal - insecure attachment, relationships, dependency, submissiveness
Impulse control - overeating, alcohol, other ways to numb emotional pain; this can vary according to envioronmental stressors and there is a misconception that borderline is so much about impulse control issues (suicidal behavior etc)
Sense of self - how you feel about yourself is affected by others-need for approval, self worth, feeling secure, feeling loved...
Defense Mechanisms - posted so much about this you can google :)
There's too much about behavioral health now. Behavior is an effect of a cause. Addressing the cause yields solutions, rather than addressing the symptoms of the actual cause. That's key FWIW BTW FYI IMO.
Hope this helps rather than hinders. Take care :)
