My therapist is nondirective to a sometimes annoying degree. I try to have something in mind.
Maybe you could change the order of discussion? Save the "bringing up to date" part of the session until last, and lead with the topic you really want to discuss.
That way if you're tending to dwell on things you find less important in order to please him, or because you assume that he's a therapist so he must have a good reason for concentrating on something, you'll still be able to discuss what you want. And if he does find therapeutic gold in what you bring up at the end, he can indicate that he'd like to continue it next session.
