I'd say call, rather than email. The problem with email is that there are privacy concerns which haven't been entirely worked out yet, and those pdocs and therapists I've communicated about this with have all said that they either have specific releases signed for email contact, or they discourage it. It's another of those areas where sometimes the technology outstrips the laws.
Could you call the hospital and ask for his voicemail, or for his department's voicemail? That's probably what I'd do.
