In reply to Borderline PD? Is skin picking self-injury?, posted by Colleen D. on April 2, 2007, at 20:11:21
Hi Colleen,
I'm sorry that you are having so much trouble in multiple areas of your life. It's tough when meds don't work and therapy isn't available. I'm glad you're posting here and looking for other avenues for help.
Personally, I'm not much in favor of diagnoses. I think they lump people who are often better off being considered separately. But I understand the temptation to have a label for things like mental disorders. It does make them seem more manageable in a way. And I know it can help in finding ways to approach them.
Skin picking can definitely be considered self injury. A lot of self injury isn't really extreme. Personally, I've SI-ed off and on for years, but I've never "really hurt myself". At least in the sense that I never needed medical treatment. I've done just about everything one can think of in terms of self harm, though. It's not about ending up seriously injured. It's about coping, in a way.
I hope you find the help you're looking for in the books you've ordered.
