I ended up setting up an anonymous ID so that I could do yahoo messenger chat yesterday with a babbler. It was kind of tricky. I had to download the yahoo messenger program and find the babbler, and the babbler had to accept me as his/her "friend" and then we were good to go. I'm not sure if a less tech-y person would be able to figure it out.
