Hmmm... mine has a CBT orientation but it's always very clear when we're planning some particular behavioral assignment, which is the only time it's at all like she's telling me what to do. And even then it's not like she says "You need to do X" and it feels like a command; rather, she suggests that a certain thing would be good and why, and I tell her how comfortable I am with the idea and maybe propose alternatives, etc. I don't think CBT necessarily means your T just tells you what to do, and you just do it.
I do bring up specific problems and she may offer suggestions, but they tend to be more along the lines of different ways of thinking about the problem than concrete courses of action. I suspect there's a lot more variation among therapists as to the degree to which they prescribe a course of action than there is among adherents of a particular mode of therapy compared to another mode.
