I used to fall asleep anywhere, anytime. At the movies, at people's houses, even right in front of my boss.

Had all the tests for narcolepsy and other sleep disorders (and set a new record at the sleep centre for the amount of time spent sleeping), but they couldn't find anything wrong.

I now know part of the problem was something in my diet. But I think mainly it was a defense. If I didn't want to be somewhere, I'd fall asleep (ie go away).

It certainly sounds like it is anxiety or dissociation related for you. Please make sure you're "with it" before driving your car. It's so easy to fall asleep at the wheel.
