I think many people do that, what I'm understanding you to mean; that we substitute other people's pain for our own, because we're afraid to feel it, is that right?
I would hope that therapists, all therapists, adequately dealt with their life issues in training, and that they're taught to continually do so all through their lives. They need to keep on top of themselves, or they can't be effectively helping others. So hopefully, they can still understand other people's pain but don't feel the need to take it on. But that's just one take on the situation, I'm quite sure there's others. Like, for example, if a therapist didn't feel they had enough empathy, and needed to work on that issue, they might decide to become really open to someone's pain.
Anybody else have more thoughts on this? It's really interesting ShortE.
