This may not apply to you, but I found that my OCD thoughts that I recognized as unreasonable but couldn't shake could be a way of my brain distracting itself from what was really wrong. When my OCD was stripped away by successful CBT my problems really started. Altogether I think I'd have rather had the OCD.

Is it possible that there is some deeper sadness or fear that your brain is channeling into hypochondria? It doesn't have to be health related. The pain my responsibility OCD was covering had absolutely nothing to do with responsibility.

I have no idea how common what happened with me was. And so I have no idea if this is a useful line of inquiry for you. But I thought I'd offer my experience.
