I don't know how frequently therapists follow suggested rules for patient communication, but from what I've read, it's recommended that they always put cards, letters, etc. in the patient's file. This is probably not what you want to hear, but, really, it's a way of the T protecting both your and his interests (in case of lawsuit, misunderstandings, etc.).
I really would recommend that you ask him about it! Tell him how it made you feel to see the corner of it in the file, and how it made you feel that he hasn't mentioned it to you.
Ya' know - when I wrote my former T a letter while I was seeing her, I didn't even give her a copy - I just read it to her in the session! That way I would see her reaction. Which was appropriate and comforting.
