badhaircut

Thanks for sharing. I think it is healthy to be sceptical about everything in the mental health.
For me, it can be summed up by mysterious comments like "We don't know what you're in analysis for." This kind of wishy-washy stuff does psychoanalysis no favours. But I think Pfinstegg is right to say that psychoanalytic therapists do not practise pure Freudian analysis, but bring other techniques into the mix, with a more helpful interpersonal approach.

Re: FAITH.
With any therapy, there needs to be a bit of a leap of faith, because if you're in the middle of major depression, you can't see that anything will work. I appreciate the need to put faith into the process, but I also am grateful that I am not being promised a miracle. Perhaps Psychoanalysis has not just moved the goal line but completely REmoved it.

Re: REAL BENEFITS
You say that turning your life around did not result from analysis...but maybe it did without you knowing, with a time delay. sounds like there were some dramatic improvements. (I really do have it bad don't I?!)

Re: Dogma

I agree with you on some of these...but,

lying on the couch: makes me less self conscious and more able to speak freely.
transference : is absolutely crucial for me. Understanding why I have certain feelings for my therapist I think is the key to my problems. My feelings for her are stronger than about any close family member - I'm not saying that's healthy, just a fact. But I think understanding those feelings might help me resolve the problems I have with my real close relationships...I hope.
as for frequency of sessions, I tend to agree with you. I only go once a week and I have yet to be persuaded that going more often would be beneficial.
