Hmmm, do you think maybe this movie was supposed to just be primarily erotic in nature, and not quite so psychological? I mean, mainly appealing to the D/S'ers out there? So, the SI was mainly a way to get the plot moving. It sounds like it would be taken as: she was always submissive but didn't realize it, had troubles and started to SI and ended up in a mental hospital, got out, and discovered her 'true' submissive nature when she hooked up with her dominant boss--which, of course, solved her problems (at least the SI...).
Some folks see a certain beauty in the S/D relationship, and the Dominant one not only dispenses discipline (spanking) but love beyond love (the bathing scene) that the submissive partner has never had.
That is an interesting plot twist with the D showing vulnerability, and a predictable response from the S to keep him in role. Which, from the way it sounds, all worked ok.
Obviously, I haven't seen the film, so this is all just speculation.
