It seems that in depression, the REM cycle goes haywire. The meds might be helping because they supress REM. REM is the stage that seems to resolve cognitive processes, but it is not very restful. It can actually wear you out more than being awake ie. nightmares etc. This might be why meds don't always continue to work. They may merely be decreasing the REM side affect of depression while the reason the REM cycle started working in overtime has not actually been resolved.
