Tealady,
No restrictions on gender for being a Witch. As far as it being different, Neo-Paganism is about the 19th most popular religion world-wide. Evn more popular than Unitarian-Universalism and Scientology.
We don't have paid clergy or churches. We worship in nature, in our homes, etc. We don't collect money from followers. There is no central governing authority, no 'revealed scripture'.
Because of the way we worship, and what's been explained above, and becasue lots of people are frightened by thier own definition of the words "Witch, and Pagan", it's difficult to be taken seriously as a religion, but fortunately things are beginning to change. The VA is finally looking at allowing our religious emblem (the pentacle) to be placed on gravestones. Still, with comments like the one from the President, it's obvious that we have work to do.
If you want to learn more about Neo-Paganism and Witchcraft / Wicca you can go to http://www.witchvox.com.
As far as Dubai, I wouldn't have had a problem with Bush taking a stand. That's his job. What I had a problem with was the apparent 'sneaking through' of the deal; the fact that none in congress or the public knew anything about it, nor had the opportunity for comment before the deal was approved.
Could that company have been secure? Would they have looked out for our interests? Quite possibly, but the people who had to be satisfied never had the chance to ask the questions and get the answers. Such is life.
Whatever happens, we've still some time left with this president. I hope that those who are criticizing today get out and vote next election. Complaining after the fact isn't enough. We need to make our voices heard before the damage is done.
