That is not unheard of, and it is something your mother has learned about her own self. Some people cannot tolerate codeine, without getting all those adverse effects.

You can buy Tylenol 1's (and the generic versions) over the counter at any pharmacy (in Canada). You have to ask for them, but you don't need a prescription. They have only 8 mg of codeine, compared to the 30 mg in Tylenol 3.

Alternatively, ibuprofen might be a fair substitute.
