Your best bet is probably to stop into Vitamin World, GNC or some other similar shop. The employees are trained to help find a solution to fit your goals (bulking up, slimming down, etc.) They may try to sell you more than you need but start small and see if that helps.
I was on the protein shake and supplement kick for a while. It was explained to me that the protein bars are a convenience (as Larry said) but they are also high in calories. From personal experience I can tell you that they don't taste the greatest either and I've tried a ton of them.
Be careful with the workout drinks. Most contain high levels of caffiene and sugar. This extra energy boost allows you to workout harder but it can be very dangerous to your heart.
