What does the word "faith" mean to you? Did you ever have faith? What was that like?
I suppose you could act under the premise that there is no eternal afterlife. So, just in case it turns out that consciousness is finite, it makes sense to live the life you have as painlessly as possible and to look for the joys that surround you. I try to live in the present and hope for a rewarding future, partly by coming to terms with, and learning from, the past.
Idyllic?
Perhaps.
It works for me. However, it is not always easy for me to keep it all together. It is MUCH harder to pursue answers to the questions you ask while in the midst of a mental illness. Be merciful with yourself and give yourself permission to be uncertain.
What would happen if you were to let go of your need to believe and simply give yourself plenty of time to work things out. It might take years for you to construct a temple that hosts your soul best. I am confident that you will find your own unique spirituality. You appear to be very motivated.
