I have never thought of it that way, but you are right. It was better that one man give up his life so that all might live eternally (John 11:50). Just as it was better that one man perish in order to obtain the (Old Testament) records to take to America (their promised land) so that a whole nation would not dwindle in unbelief. Because, the historian Laban wasn't going to give them up, and so Nephi was commanded to slay him, put on his clothing, fake out the guards, and steal the plates of brass that contained all the writings from Adam to Zedekiah. (another example of being commanded to do something that would normally be wrong)
