Hi Capricorn! I am not sure why you are asking about a book about BPD and ... believe me ... it matters.

If you are living with/interacting with someone with the disorder and want to learn more about it, you will probably be drawn to one type of book.

If you are living with BPD yourself, you will probably want to stay away from pop psychology books about it.

I am in the latter group, and when I first ordered every book on the subject from Amazon, I was incredibly stressed to read what the books say.

-- That I am basically out of control and incurable.
-- That my potential for violence is enormous
-- That my rages will continue forever

And equally invalidating statements. And all UNTRUE statements. BPD is not only treatable, but it is curable with the right therapy, the right skills training, a trained therapist and a commitment to learn ways to cope with having an extremely sensitive set of feelings.

I recommend you look up Marsha Linehan. She has both a book (heavy on research and mainly for trained therapists though very recommended for people with BPD, too, because it really gets at what this is all about); and a "skills training manual" that is used in combination with skills training therapy (for me, two hours a week for nine months).

Linehan is the person who invented dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).

Feel free to ask if you'd like more clarification or info ... I have been through this disorder's clutches, up and down the roller coaster ride. And while I have trouble sometimes because of my nature and physiology, I am very happy to report that my therapist says I don't really even qualify for the diagnosis. This is after three years of therapy and I have no intention to quit.
