It may not be quite as meaningless as you're looking for -- I"m not familiar with Howard the Duck -- but it is very funny stuff. And Christopher Moore is laugh-out-loud-while-alone-in-the-room funny at times.

How about "The Eyre Affair" or "The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove"? The first is Fforde, the second Moore.

If you're willing to settle for bad puns, Piers Anthony might suit. "Crewel Lye" is the first in his series.

Light and frothy usually works for me, but I'm not feeling either of those today, so can't remember anything more to suggest.
