Your description made me think of r.a. lafferty, specifically "The Devil is Dead" I don't know how available it is these days, but I loved it back when I first read it, and hunted down another copy after I loaned out the first. I haven't read Becket or granta, but I read Howard the Duck earlier today. I'm reading all my old comics in the order they came out. They were at my parent's house for 15 years. Unemployment is wonderful. Mark Leyner is the most meaningless author ever, but I like him. Try "My Cousin, My Gastroenterologist"
