hi karen

i'm trying to remember which books of his i read. ooh amazon does help with this.

i read "women", "post office", and "hollywood". i think i read "factotum" and "ham on rye" too, but i would have to ask the library for a printout of my borrowing habits to verify.

these books are great reading for people with short attention spans (read: i could manage them when i couldn't manage 5 pages of another book)

post office was especially good when i was out of work. women was blatantly misogynistic (just like all his other books). he paints a good picture of the drunk society. much less pretentious than a hemingway or a fitzgerald. (frequently all their characters did was wander around and drink, no need for inflated prose and expectations for the drunks!)

i loved the work at the time, but i'm not sure if it's a good idea to go back and read more of his work. i did read it in a very dark period of my life, and i may find the reading triggering. not so sure if i want to go there.

right now i'm reading a book called "amriika", about a man from dar es salaam, tanzania, and his journey to america about the time of the vietnam war. next up, for nihilism and classical value, is kafka's "the trial". we'll see if i can deal with the classics again. giddy up.
