Everybody identified/projected their own ideas in him. He never expressed his own thoughts and ideas to anybody but his friend in the hospital. He became a sort of pet to everybody around him. McCullers uses only single 'quotes' in the story-that's signficant somehow. I happened to have Dylan's "Time Out of Mind" playing when I read partIII. It seemed especially poignant after Singer's suicide and Jake has to leave town hitchhiking to keep from getting thrown in jail for being an "agitator". My Heart is in the Highlands wherever I roam...
