I've read about some of the studies indicating this. However, the effect was not that large. Correlation does not imply causation. What if a great percentage of people taking vitamins do so in order to compensate for what they believe are poor eating habits? They might die from the results of a chronically unhealthy diet rather than the ingestion of vitamins.
