In reply to schizophrenia is frequently used with nicotine, posted by rjlockhart37 on January 20, 2014, at 12:15:15
Hi. Nicotine effects more than just dopamine, but that's the main one. I smoked for 12 years. First started out with a few cigarettes, then after my psychosis and going on Risperdal, I went up to 2 packs a day for several years. Finally quit in 2012 using combination nicotine replacement. Unfortunately, two years later I'm still wearing the patch. I couldn't seem to quite get off the nicotine entirely, but at least I'm not smoking cigarettes anymore, which is a big accomplishment for me since I have schizophrenia.
How long have you been smoking? I think the big question I have to ask is, are you ready to quit the habit? One day, you will feel ready to quit. It took me 12 years, but eventually, I said enough is enough. Hang in there!! You'll quit when you feel it is the right time to do so. Until then, you might try and get some extra vitamin C. This vitamin gets depleted from smoking cigarettes. Good luck with everything!! Take care.Lao
