Sometimes they are caused by something called Leaky Gut Syndrome.
Our intestines should be like a hose - the wastes go out of our body & do NOT leak into our body. Sometimes something happens & microscopic amounts of partly digested food does leak into our body.
It's my understanding that something like this happens: our body recognizes these substances as foreign matter & somehow develops a sensitivity to them.
Various members of our family have had success in dealing with this problem by using a product called:
L-Glutamine
The kind I have right now is called IntestiNew. "supports a healthy intestinal lining"
The site listed on the container is:

This product also has N-acetyl D-glucosamine & other stuff in it.
NAG (above) is also good for Leaky Gut Syndrome.
Sometimes a systemic overgrowth of Candida (a yeast that probably most people have to some extent) can cause Leaky Gut Syndrome. I had Candidiasis systemically & went on an 'anti-candida' diet for 2 years. One of my symptoms was sensitivity to chemicals, fragrances, etc. I had various symptoms, the most scarey of which was my tongue would swell. My doctor sent me to an allergist, who suggested the anti-candida diet.
He also said I was to carry 2 Epipens (adrenaline) just in case! This might give you a start in looking at causes.
Please don't hesitate to ask me any questions you want to.:-) Kath
