> ThanksYes, anxiety and magnesium do a little dance together. Magnesium helps suppress anxiety, but anxiety causes magnesium to be flushed into the urine (an unfortunate consequence of adrenaline release).
If you're chronically anxious, you should gradually build up to whatever amount your body can tolerate (could be 500 mg or 1,000 mg per day). The problem with magnesium supplements is that they can cause diarrhea, so you have to build the dose carefully. Your body becomes more tolerant to magnesium the longer you take it. If you get diarrhea, cut the dose by 1/4 or 1/3, wait a couple weeks, and increase it again. You should then tolerate that dose. Keep going, until your body doesn't tolerate it (or until you hit 1,000 mg or so).
You also have to make sure you're getting enough vitamin D. 80% of North Americans are deficient in vitamin D. Minimum 400 IU/day. Better, 1,000 IU/day.
Also, anxiety often responds to the specific form of vitamin B-3 called niacinamide (also called by the older name nicotinamide). If you see the part -amide, you have the right stuff. Up to 2,000 mg/day, in divided doses. If you use niacinamide, make sure you also take a B-complex.
