> Hi Lar,
> I've been backing down on the large doses of vits/minerals. Last Sunday ( a week ago) I knew I had too much zinc(probably) or selenium from the metallic taste in my mouth. (gone now)Zinc is a key mineral in the sensitivity of taste buds and the sense of smell. We each have a differing capacity for retention of these minerals, and you're wise to adjust the dose based on responses like that. BTW, bringing a concept in from another of your posts, brazil nuts are probably the most concentrated natural source of selenium, so you should factor them into the mineral equation. (I just tried to find an exact amount of selenium, but it turns out that the selenium content can vary 100-fold depending on the region in which the brazil nuts are grown. :-/ )
> Don't like to admit I was also sitting at the computer with tears streaming down my face while reading your replies to me. I'm blaming too much something..umm zinc from the picolinate form?
Don't overthink it, OK?
>Just wanted you to know I did appreciate your replies and have been thinking, was just a bit brain fogged to give reasoned replies to all of them...but I will!
I'm learning a lot from you, too. This is win-win, methinks.
> The zinc I stopped after that and then selenium the next day, then the magnesium/ascorbate I tapered off..and other multis. I'm getting ready for the blood tests etc.

> I tried 2000mg tyrosine on Thursday., and it was too much. My blood pressure increased a little from 120/80 to 135/88. I stayed awake all day! but I did feel it was a bit much. Could feel heartbeat was wrong..too fast. (resting pulse 91 ) I woke up after 5 hrs sleep and didn't feel tired, but my tooth nerve ached., strangely the tyrosine seemed to quiet it., I think..Took another 500mg tyrosine and thyroid med and went back to sleep, woke up in morning with a slightly too much T3 headache(mild tension headache middle of forehead) and eyes stinging and bit glazed...so I've stopped for a while. It doesn't surprise me that tyrosine affected your thyroid function. You will be bound to have to tweak doses a bit, to find a new balance.
> Feeling better every day. yesterday and today , feel good and I can even kinda type without correcting spelling 20 times for each word! That's great.
> There is something strange to my reactions to vitamins/supplements(like tyrosine) that I also feel best for a few days after I stop taking large doses of them. I've heard others say the same of drugs/vitamins..and I don't think the blood level is the answer as taking differing amounts doesn't produce the same effect. I suspect it has something to do with altering different receptor levels /sensitivities while retaining higher amounts of transmitters for a while...or something similar on the cellular level/ion pumps/ATP level. It's beyond me.That's quite a valid explanation. It may also be the sudden absence of inhibition; some enzymes have inhibitors that reduce their activity in the overabundance of a substrate.
My personal supplementation scheduling is pulsatile. Little bursts, driven by intuition. I'm just not constitutionally disposed to routinely consume supplements. I'm too easily distracted, I'm lazy, whatever. I can rationalize it many different ways, but I don't take supps every day. And yet, I obtain substantial benefits from this pattern of behaviour.
I've also had periods where I've supplemented more religiously, and that has worked for me, too. You might consider that to be a comparison between acute treatment vs. chronic (i.e. maintenance therapy). <shrug>
> Pity it doesn't last! Once everything drops back down and resets, its back to needing them again.
Have you tried lower, but intermittent, doses during the "pause" phase?
> One thing I have noticed about taking tyrosine is it increases my desire for chocolate greatly!!!...similar to PMS times! That's intriguing.
> So I'm guessing this means there is something missing that is supplied by phenylalanine?
Phenethylamine (PEA) is in chocolate, and it can be produced in your brain from phenylalanine, but not tyrosine.
> I've bought some l-phenylalanine (couldn't find any dl so far), and I'll try that soon.
> I'll have to go back and reread your posts to see if taking both the l-phenyl and the tyrosine together is similar to the dl-phenylalanine? Probably not! Not. Sorry. The d-isomer of phenylalanine has distinctive effects. Still, I personally believe that even l-phenylalanine is superior to tyrosine for many people, as it has more possible uses to which it can be put, by your body.
> T3(thyroid) stimulates appetite, but in most the effect is not great and only last the first few days they begin.
> With me(unusually) it is ongoing. Doesn't poop out unfortunately. That is why I tried the tyrosine. I does take an edge off my hunger,. but not enough...sigh. Perhaps the l-phenylalanine will help more?.I hope so. I think the d-,l- product would be more likely to block hunger, as it prolongs the half-life of endorphins, the natural brain opiates.
> What I have found though, is the rebound effect of stopping the tyrosine has increased this appetite stimulation sooo much..I need my lips sown together or something!
Can you reduce the T3 a bit, if you try tyrosine again?
> Before the T3 , I had zilch appetite, didn't gain too much weight as never ate much.
That's what I'm thinking, that the T3 effect has been magnified.
> I thought the appetite gain was good that it allowed me to eat a healthy diet..but the weight gain is ridiculous. My temperature/metabolism is still not high enough I guess. (I'm running about one degree too cold at present.)
I'm going to try and figure out if you can reduce the hunger thingie. I'm not sure it's possible. (I had major hunger when I tried Remeron, and I don't think I found anything that was an anorectant.)
> I think I'm going to need a appetite suppressing drug soon, if the l-phenyl doesn't work. I can't get my mind off the starving feeling.
That's brutal, I know.
> > I've been using DLPA, but I've just about run out. I've got some tyrosine. I'll let you know.
> How did you go?
> Hugs, JanI didn't try it, yet.
Hugs to you, sweetie.
