Adding my thoughts on this, hoping maybe they will shed some light. I'm used to hearing people use "Excuse me?" in sort of an indignant tone of voice as a way to say "Hey, you just said something really offensive there, and I want you to realize it." Or even "I dare you to repeat that." When used that way, it's kind of aggressive, and I can see how someone might react defensively, especially if they were not meaning to be offensive. It sounds like Emmy did *not* mean to use the phrase that way here, but perhaps that's how people heard it.
So both Emmy & Happy are feeling unfairly accused and misunderstood at this point. Happy feels unfairly accused of saying something offensive, and Emmy feels unfairly accused of saying something snotty.
Well that's how I see it anyway. I'm sorry to see folks hurting and angry over this.
