I've been following the civility postings quite closely and, as a rule, I agree with Dr. Bob.
If I look at the way we operate IRL, one could never hope to be blatantly disprespectful to someone or something and expect to maintain good relationships.
Disrespect and hostility breed disrespect and hostility which effectively ends discussion. IRL you just can't be rude, so why would we allow it on the internet?
IRL, those who can't contribute in a meaningful way eventually get excluded from the discussion. Again, why should this be different on the internet?
Not only that, but disrespect is counterproductive. The world is filled with people that simply point out problems, but sorely lacking in those that truly wish to solve them. Instead of just pointing out problems, a better approach is to say "I think this is a problem and this is what I think needs to happen to solve it". This opens up discussion about the ISSUE and not the manner in which the issue is discussed.
Being civil doesn't mean you can't have an opinion, or that you can't be passionate, it simply means that you can have a rational discussion about something you feel strongly about. It's about self-control and respect. It is a skill that can be learned and effective communicators work on it everyday.
Anyway, this is just my opinion.
