I smile at people too. When I was younger, I used to give some strangers a big huge bright sparking smile and say "hi!" as I was walking by. Sometimes they'd respond with a smile; sometimes nothing; sometimes they'd give me a look that seemed full of skepticism and distrust.

Lately I don't do the big smile (lately meaning the past 10 years!!) -- I think because the people who gave the negative response got bigger.

It sucks when people don't smile back. Do they think I'm a)deranged b)going to attack them c)going to try to get something from them? Or are they so stressed from work and life and their own cares that a smile just can't get to their face in time?

Hmmmm.
