>Just so you know, I was just pointing out instances where your theory of <we don't give those who commit a petty theft the same amount of punishment that we give a murderer but that's exactly what the current system does here.> is not correct. Nothing more than that. :-)
But the reason I mentioned the whole 3 strikes rule is that the criminals know what will happen to them. On that 3rd strike it’s no shock to them when they get the 50 years to life sentence. The laws are clear. The same goes here. The rules are laid out in advance so you know what to expect. Of course Dr. Bob has more leeway here then the courts do, but if he chooses not to show mercy then that is his prerogative whether we like it or not.
> And I agree with that to some extent - but when you get a situation where there are very minor offenses or when someone mistakenly breaks a rule and they get a very long block, it's just wrong to me. Then I see a situation where someone is viciously calling another person names and intentionally taunting them and they only get one week (despite the fact that they've gotten one a one week block previously), then the system is broken.
>I understand your frustrations with this type of system. I wouldn’t necessarily say the system is broken though. Even though there are set rules and consequences, there also seems to be a lot of wiggle room for the punishment. I obviously don’t have a ton of experience here, but from reading other posts it seems to me that a lot of the decision making regarding punishment relies heavily on a person’s past history on this board. Sorry to use the criminal justice system again as an example, but you’ll see this type of thing happen every day in the courts. Two people committing the same crime can easily get two completely different punishments based on past criminal history. And a person who commits a minor crime can easily receive a longer sentence than someone who commits a worse crime. Most people prefer it that way. Now these are just examples. I am not comparing anyone here to a criminal (just to make that clear). :-P
If I’m misunderstanding anything, please let me know. This is just my interpretation of what has been transpiring on this board the few weeks I’ve been here. I guess I picked the perfect time to join! I get to learn all about the intricacies of the rules and punishment structure right off the bat. I’m still deciding if I should jump for joy or turn around and run away as fast as I can. Or does this just mean I have no excuse if I break any rules???? Hahaha! ;-)
