Profiles? Why we need a yahoo group » Dr. Bob

I've set up yahoo groups before. A yahoo "group" is *the* best off-site site to centralize any group's personal information and keep it confidential, password-protected, and with membership by approval only.

You do have to be willing to get a yahoo ID (yahoo has cleaned up its server problems.)

And you have to join the yahoo group, but beyond that, you share only the personal info you choose to. More privacy: the group can be set to NOT appear in yahoo's group listings and group searches.

On a group's front page, there are links to-

Files: This is a great place to upload any creative work for the rest of us to see -- art, music, writing. Sculpture? Dance? A problem. A spreadsheet? I suppose.. .

Photos: . . .which might be fun. Remember, not public! Just need to get your photo onto your computer, and at your command, it gets sucks it up onto the web. Magic.*

Bookmarks (Links) : Great reference, add links of interest, links to articles, links you've posted that are otherwise "lost and forgotten" when PB page is archived.

Database: sets up the Contact List with all your web IDs: Yahoo Messenger, AIM, ICQ, etc. Again, as desired!

Polls: Anyone can start a poll, serious or funny, with results issued to the group or not. Some people create polls that are ongoing: astro sign, Enneagram number, Type, etc. We could find out, Most Popular Drug! Least popular! Most side effects! Disorders, Diagnoses. . .The possiblities are endless.

Polls are set to accept anonymous responses or not, and any response at all is, of course, optional.

Members: List of members, who want to be listed, and optional personal info, like, age, general location, email, occupation. ..

Calendar: Enter any event, like CHAT (!) and members are AUTOMATICALLY notified. . and get this: in ADVANCE!

Notification options are always chosen by you: Email or no email, web only. Notifications--of events, new files, new polls etc.--will always appear on the yahoo board (which they call Messages.)

A Yahoo group doesn't have to be used as a board, (tho it might be an interesting place for PB off-topic posts. But then, someone would have to be willing to moderate that. . . I see I am opening another can of worms altogether. One about which I am not prepared to do anything but close the lid. Real tight. Nailing it shut.)

A group needs three or four people with moderator status to set up and maintain the few "behind the scenes" tasks, such as the contacts list.

Every yahoo group has a button, Join This Group." Since membership would be subject to approval, this would be linked to Dr. Bob--I'm sure he wants more to do--or to the Moderators, or in some other way checked for current PB membership.

Sound good? This is not out of the goodness of my heart. I hate floundering.
