Beginning as early as ancient Egypt, woman placed a small amount of Bella-Donna extract in their eyes, just as an ophthalmologist would use atropine eye drops in order to dilate the pupils for an exam. Atropine, being anticholinergic, caused women's pupils to enlarge in order to look more attractive to men. Scopolamine is also an anticholinergic. It replaced atropine, for the most part.

I forgot to mention that scopolamine has been investigated as a rapid-acting antidepressant to treat TRD.
