I guess the level of functioning one has, whether they work or not, is one way I can gauge if the meds I am taking allow me to do the activities of daily life (ADL). Those include your hygiene, nutrition, buying and cooking food, paying your bills, staying on top of doctor appts, etc. Everyone has different standards but those of us with severe depression know when our capabilities are failing and when we are not coming out of a bad place for a long time.
So functioning as a person even if unemployed should have a basic level of adherence to certain routines that are daily requirements to live at a basic level. At least that is how I can judge my functioning and what my doctor wants to know, else she cant treat me for what I tell her I able able to do well or not at all.
