the orthomolecular people say to avoid regular use of DLPA while on neuroleptic treatment. I think its kind of the equivalent (sort of...) of the old school combo pills, ThoraDex, StelaDex, Eskatrol...low dose of an old school neuroleptic with however much dexedrine, usually for depression, sometimes for weight loss. one reason those pills disappeared from the market: sometimes, the combination resulted in TD, plus akathisia with an amphetamine on board...not good, not good at all.
the dopamine depleting agents used in TD kind of...scare me, I guess is a way to put it. It seems like they could cause bad depression, just like reserpine did (does? is still produced?), and long term...I kind of wonder if both the movement disorder and the psych problems could get worse, especially the negative and cognitive domain of symptoms. but that's just me. clearly, these "breakthrough" drugs will be on patent for a long time, so...yeah. its what's available.
I'm back to a more stripped down Orthomolecular cocktail, myself. 2 grams C, 1 gram niacinamide, 1 b-100 tablet...3x daily, with food. also take a decent multi-vitamin and 1000 IU natural form E w/ mixed tocopherols. so far, so good. I think adding the niacinamide back in was good -- for me, anyway -- because it does seem to promote better sleep and I'm both calmer and a tad more focused during the day. Some observational studies from the 60-80s using similar cocktails in people treated with the old school neuroleptics found -very- low rates of TD, so...((fingers crossed))...I'm hoping I'll stay tic-free for years to come.
if I recall correctly, Hoffer would max out at something like 2000 IU E for existing TD.
