i don't see the big deal. the benzodiazepines have long outsold barbiturates for the vast majority of indications. benzodiazepines are remarkably similar, just...safer, fewer drug-drug interactions, tolerance is unlikely to lead to an unintentional lethal overdose, etc. etc. etc.
Quaaludes, on the other hand, should probably have just been better regulated (and more carefully prescribed) rather than being banned, outright. not that I'm a huge retro drug fan, but it does seem the the quaaludes were a lot safer than barbiturates and many doctors came to appreciate the effectiveness in insomnia, with little or no hang over. even then, though...
long term sedative use is not desirable, and the ill effects can easily outweigh any benefits (not always, please don't get angry with me). this is obviously true of benzodiazepines, especially with Klonopin becoming the It benzodiazepine for long term maintenance, despite a higher risk of drug induced depression vs other available options.
