I should think that enough people were unhappy with the short length of time that alprazolam acts for such that there is a market for the extended-release version. Sometimes, half-life is not a reliable measure of how long a drug's effects last for. Regular alprazolam will work for about 5 hours. Lorazepam is closer to 8 hours.
What are you using lorazepam for?
Perhaps alprazolam is worth a try, anyway. You won't know how well it matches your requirements until you try it.
Good luck.
