Back in the day, uppers were all the rage for varying degrees of depression. Amphetamines alone, amphetamines with sedatives ("Dexamyl," anyone?), amphetamines with neuroleptics ("ThoraDex," "Eskatrol," etc.). Ritalin was marketed heavily for some depressive states and for treating people on neuroleptics who needed something to counter the heavy sedation.
And then...well, in the 70s The FDA cracked down on stimulants (for a season...). Now, there's $$$ being made in "Adult ADD," which really looks a lot like what they used to consider milder depressive states with fatigue and inability to do what needed to be done. So...stimulants for depression never went away, but the diagnosis+labels did change. Such is the nature of psychiatry.
For whatever reason, the more "severe" your problems in psychiatry, the more noxious your "treatment." ADD=amphetamines, maybe Ritalin; depression= "antidepressants," many of which are like emotional novocaine; "Bipolar" and "Schizophrenia" often=neuroleptics, anti-epileptics, and the numbing "antidepressants." Oh, and shock treatments are making a comeback. Apparently, those of us with severe diagnoses don't need brain cells. Awesome.
I do hope psychiatry gets over its fear of euphoria or even just feeling good, at all. Shrinks, for whatever reason, seem to be a fairly Purtianical bunch...unless, of course, you're rich and going to a cash only doctor. That's much, much different.
