In reply to Geodon bringing on major depression, posted by jennifer248805 on July 5, 2013, at 8:06:01
I had no adverse withdrawal effects emerge when I discontinued Geodon. I don't recall if I tapered the dosage or discontinued it abruptly.
Some antipsychotics produce startup side effects that often disappear. For example, Abilify can produce insomnia, anxiety, and feelings of restlessness during the first week. These things are often likened to mild akathisia. For me, this occurred for a few days and then disappeared completely. I started at 20 mg/day. Abilify can be a good drug to treat depression when low energy and amotivation are present.
Two relatively new drugs have demonstrated antidepressant effects: Saphris and Latuda. A friend of mine is having great success treating schizoaffective bipolar disorder with a combination of Seroquel and Saphris. Adding the Saphris really helped to energizer her.
There are no guarantees as to how you will react to any psychotropic drug. A certain amount of trial-and-error is still necessary to find the best treatments.
At this point in time, I am not afraid of taking the SGA (second generation antipyshotics) atypical antipsychotics. 15 years ago, I could not be convinced to take Zyprexa, even though it turns out to be the best drug to treat the severe mania I occasionally experience.
