I don't have any statistics, but it's still frequently used in bipolar disorder. Most likely, antipsychotics are used more commonly because they tend to provide more rapid and substantial 'control' when initiated during acute manic states. In addition, some antipsychotics such as Seroquel have demonstrated efficacy in bipolar depression as well as mania. Depakote on the other hand is predominantly anti-manic.
In acute mania, atypical antipsychotics have similar effectiveness to haloperidol (Haldol) but tend to cause fewer adverse effects.
