In reply to Moclobemide. Anyone on it long term?, posted by JohnV on March 27, 2003, at 20:06:59
I've been taking moclobemide for several months, originally prescribed for anxiety and depression. When I started taking it, I noticed the positive effects immediately - improved mood, alertness, and motivation, as well as an increased sex drive - within a couple of hours of taking my first dose. After a couple weeks I also started to feel a lot calmer, but not sedated (though I do sleep better now on the whole).
The effects are no longer as noticeable, but I've also reduced the dose to about half what I was originally prescribed (down to 100 mg per day - I cut the tablet in half and take half in the morning and half in the evening), as I feel this is enough to get the support I need. I don't want to feel "high", just well.
I haven't really noticed any side effects. If I take the pill too close to bed time, it can keep me awake for a while. Sometimes I feel that I'm more absent minded than I used to be, but it's difficult to be objective about that - the situation that was causing me to be anxious/stressed is still present in my life (for now) and is just as likely to be the cause of my being distracted.
On the whole, I'd say it's been a success. Just for reference, I'm a middle aged male in very good physical health, and I drink alcohol moderately. Moclobemide is the second anti-depressent I tried. The first was cipramil, but I didn't like the way it made me feel so I never got past the first dose.
Hope my experience helps.
