I think psychiatric meds can help severe problems. You can control hallucinations, agitation, mania, sometimes help severe depression, sedate severe anxiety away...
...but I don't think you necessarily need a shrink to do it. 1% of the population will be affected by schizophrenia. .5% bipolar I. A somewhat larger percentage psychotic depression. How many shrinks do we need, if we restrict treatment to the severely ill?
Dr.Szasz--may he RIP--made some good points about psychiatry. Then again, he also made his living as a psychoanalyst and critic of psychiatry. For me, as a patient, I'd much rather see a family doc than a shrink any day of the week.
